It helps ocean innovators and their backers measure and share their impact. Its first iteration was prepared with broad support from the ecosystem.
1000 Ocean Startups was launched in 2021 with the participation of:

Mission
1000 Ocean startups is a coalition to accelerate Ocean Impact Innovation
The coalition brings together the global ecosystem of incubators, accelerators, competitions, matching platforms and VCs supporting startups for ocean impact. Our objective is to scale at least 1000 transformative startups by the end of the Ocean Decade to restore ocean health and achieve SDG14.
We achieve our objective through (i) building synergies between ecosystem participants and (ii) telling the story of successes already achieved and the potential of innovation to regenerate Ocean health, to inspire investment in scaling now the ocean impact innovation ecosystem.
As the coalition works to achieve its mission, it responds to the Transformations recommended by the Ocean Panel.
The coalition is a founding member and Implementation Partner of the GEOS UN Decade Program.

Why Innovation?
The ocean is facing existential threats
But we can help regenerate it with Innovation
The ocean IS THE LUNG OF OUR PLANET AND A MAIN REGULATOR OF CLIMATE. THE OCEAN FEEDS AND inspires us.
Yet, largely due to the assault of human activity and negligence, it is losing biodiversity at an alarming rate, agonising from countless pollutions, and it is warming beyond levels bearable by marine life.
Addressing these immense and urgent challenges requires rapid systemic change.
Innovation can help bring such systemic change, by proposing fundamentally more sustainable and efficient ways to produce and consume, by creating transparency and accountability.
Innovation can also achieve change swiftly. Indeed, implemented by businesses, it addresses large markets and can therefore be profitable and financed by private capital. This means innovation can scale rapidly.
The members of 1000 Ocean Startups have dedicated their talent, energy and resources to scaling the startups that invent and deploy critical innovations for ocean health.

Call to action
Partner with us to scale the Ocean Impact Innovation Ecosystem
The ocean impact innovation ecosystem has already delivered inspiring success stories. Incubators, accelerators, competitions, matching platforms and venture capital firms across the globe have backed many startups. These already help make seafood more sustainable, stop plastic pollution, reduce greenhouse gas emissions from shipping or produce renewable energy from currents and waves.
1000 Ocean Startup members back startups with unparalleled impact and business expertise. They are driven by their passion for the ocean and for tangible, large-scale, rapid results.
Investors, governments, and philanthropists have an opportunity to help scale the ecosystem now. We invite you to partner with the members of the coalition, invest in their work, and hereby play a critical role in scaling transformative 1000 ocean startups by 2030.

“We have invested in several accelerators and VCs of 1000 Ocean Startups. This community is vibrant, inspiring and highly impactful. I look forward to deepening our partnership with the coalition.“
PETER BRYANT / BUILDERS VISION
“1000 Ocean Startup members provide critical support to ocean entrepreneurs. This is vital, as we need to create a near-future where ocean industries are free of emissions and waste, and built on regenerative models delivering on the global goals. This is why TOOL, in partnership with Nordic Innovators, is proud to dedicate a fixed share of our revenue to back 1000 Ocean Startup members."
